Borat 2 Is Good, but It Could Have Been Better

Most sequels fail to be as successful as the original movie, especially when there is a significant gap between them. Although Borat 2 was not as bad as the sequels of Zoolander and Dumb and Dumber, it was still not as good as fans would have liked. The original movie was so good because Sacha Baron Cohen exposed the hideous beliefs throughout America brilliantly, without much effort. Cohen, as Borat, is able to lay bare the misogynist and xenophobic values that permeate the culture of hate. The movie does a better job than most social critics at portraying the truth.

What most people miss out on is the fact that Borat’s stance on most matters is satirical. It is evident in one of the scenes when he makes a patriotic and emotional speech on obliterating the Middle East. The crowd there loves every word he says and cheers for him. However, when sings a fake version of Kazakhstan’s national anthem, the crowd soon becomes critical of him, making their nationalist views seem ignorant. Following the example of the original movie, Borat 2 is also critical of the cultural and political environment. The only issue is that it does it to the point that one feels that it is no longer funny.

It comes to the point that one often feels that the movie suggests the viewers to feel a certain way about specific events instead of exposing them. The low-blows and the jokes do not land the way it did in the previous film. One of the reasons for that is the fixation of the story on the relationship between Borat and her daughter, Tutar. In its handbook, the Borat government objectifies and puts down her daughter because she is a woman.

In another scene, Borat can be seen performing a fertility dance with his daughter when blood spills through her dress. Although this was a perfect opportunity to address body shaming and objectification, instead it appears that it was only added for the shock value and has no insights to give on the issues of gender roles.

However, the movie does have a lot of merits too. There are certain scenes in which the satire will remind the fans of the original movie. It also depicts the tolerance and patience of people with others. Most of the victims of the protagonist tolerate his misanthropic views and stay composed. Moreover, some of the scenes are also heart touching, like Borat’s daughter’s interaction with Jeanie Jones. So, even if the film disappoints in many ways, there is still much for the fans to appreciate as well.

Borat 2 might not be as good as the original movie, but it is still worth watching. The movie ends well and will leave fans nostalgic. This movie is undoubtedly something to look out for even if it is not as good as the classic Borat.
