Dragon’s Dogma Anime Adaptation to Release in on Netflix

Netflix has been on a roll this year, releasing great quality content one after the other. And when they are not releasing content, they please the fans by finalizing and announcing shows or movies. The latest project that Netflix has opened up is Dragon’s Dogma. The streaming site has decided to make this cult classic into an animation series. The game first made its debut 8 years back on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It soon cultivated a dedicated fan following and they collectively put it in the cult classic category.  The makers saw it fit to expand and the expansion was called Dark Arisen and it got ports on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

But the game and the animated show do not bear a lot of resemblance. Nonetheless, the fans are stoked to see the series, no matter how dissimilar the story lines may be. Netflix began screening Castlevania anime in 2017 and the fans did not need convincing at all. It was like love at first sight. Netflix rolled out a third season early this year and officially confirmed a fourth season. To continue on this momentum that they had built, Netflix also went ahead and announced that they intend to air another animated show inspired by a game, picking Cyberpunk 2077 as their basis. The show will be called Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and will use the game’s night city as their primary location but the characters will all be new.

While the game Cyberpunk 2077 will reach the consoles in 2020, the anime will hit our phone and laptop screens somewhere in 2022. But that long waiting period will not be a barrier for people who want to see Dragon’s Dogma. Netflix’s official Twitter handle NX shared that the show will be available on Netflix on 17th of September, 2020 and they also revealed a poster. Their official Facebook page shared additional stills from the show, which helped the audience recognize some characters of the upcoming show and also determine the possible antagonist dragon. For genre classification, Netflix put Dragon’s Dogma in the “dark” and “exciting” category. The Twitter poster was accompanied by a summary that said “Only the Arisen can face the Dragon and defeat the apocalypse. Here’s your first look at the animated series adaptation of Capcom’s action fantasy classic Dragon’s Dogma, arriving September 17th.” Capcom Company may not be responding to the fans desperately asking for a sequel to the game, but the creators still see a ray of hope. Director Hideaki Itsuno has said that they might end up putting Devil May Cry 5 on a hold for a while and consider a sequel of Dragon’s Dogma. While an anime that bases itself on Dragon’s Dogma might not be something that concerns Capcom but if the show garners huge viewership, it might prove an existing need for a new part of the game and nudge the company towards thinking about it seriously. If Dragon’s dogma is equally good as Castlevania, the fans better be geared up to begin binge watching the season.
